Vitamin D is important for maintaining the health of various organs. Besides regulating calcium and phosphorus for strong bones, it also supports the heart, metabolism, lungs, and immune system. Deficiency in vitamin D is becoming more common, especially among people with limited sun exposure, those with darker skin tones, and pregnant women.


Pregnancy increases the body's need for vitamin D, making deficiency during this time a global issue affecting 5% to 90% of pregnant women depending on the region. This deficiency is linked to serious health problems for both mother and baby, including high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and low birthweight. A comprehensive review of 15 studies involving over 174,000 women highlights the importance of vitamin D during pregnancy:


Risks of Deficiency: Low vitamin D levels in pregnant women are linked to preterm birth, low birth weight, recurrent miscarriages, bacterial infections, and gestational diabetes.

Benefits of Supplementation: Taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy can increase birth weight, lower the risk of pre-eclampsia and miscarriage, and improve outcomes for women with gestational diabetes.

Quality of Evidence: While the benefits are clear, the overall quality of the studies is low, and more research is needed.

Recommendations for Pregnant Women: To reduce the risk of adverse outcomes, pregnant women should monitor their vitamin D levels and speak with their healthcare providers about taking more than 400 IU/day of vitamin D supplements. This can help ensure better health for both mother and baby.
